I like my neighbors

After weeks of doing other things for Smile Politely, my regular column returns this week: Walking and Waving in C-U, where I give some love to my city and neighbors.

But again, not in a weird way.

Dan,

That was a great article. It is one of the many reasons why I am moving back to Champaign. Which reminds me, your blog subtitle is the intersection of church and state and culture. I know that church and state intersect near the Virginia, but where is culture street?

Well, that's a good question.

Is C-U culture North Prospect?
Green St on campus?
Goodwin and Oregon (Krannert?)
5th and Grove (Douglass Park)?

Ah culture. Such a slippery thing...

I smell a column here, Dan, all those intersection questions.

Thankfully, our experience living in the DC beltway doesn't mesh with yours--after living here only a couple of months, we ran into a friend (urbanmenno, in fact) on the Metro. We've had similar encounters with folks from church various random places around the city. While I miss the assured familiarity of a town like Goshen, the surprise of seeing a familiar face around here takes on a whole new level of excitement.
Now, balance that against having to drive the beltway, or any city streets, or the throngs of people, or the tourists...
