Nervous About the Next Debate

The results that matter from last Friday's debate are in, and it looks like a Obama has picked up a small percentage of voters. I had a hard time scoring it myself, because I'm too biased at this point.

However, after watching the latest SNL drubbing of Sarah Palin, I am now officially nervous about the vice presidential debate on Thursday:

The skit is certainly funny, but I fear that comedy like is creating such unrealistically low expectations for her that if she merely shows up at the debate and manages not to mutter to herself in tongues or curse at Americans in general, it will be seen as a huge victory.

This is pretty much what happened at the Republican convention. There was a lot of ridicule at McCain for his choice, but then she was able to give a good speech, and suddenly everyone thought she was brilliant.

So, we'll see how this plays out. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm feeling uneasy at this point.

I liked the line about Palin becoming increasingly girlish and charming when cornered. I hope people keep that in mind during the debates. I'm not watching. Can't bear it. I'm playing poker instead.

They say confession is good for the soul, and I can see you're having a good day.

Yea, especially when one's bias is towards truth and responsibility :) :)

All in all, poker is a pretty good metaphor for the whole thing.

Nervous? You shouldn't be. As long as she just shows up, Biden doesn't belittle or embarrass her, stick his foot in his mouth, or make it clear that he knows more than she does about any of the topics, the Dems should be golden.

Does that help?

I happened to finally watch the actual Couric interview this morning, and was just... horrified. I had thought the Republicans were hiding Palin because... well, maybe some tricky reason. I didn't realize that they've figured out they've made a huge mistake, and that she's a complete idiot. The SNL people have her nailed (Tina Fey rocks!). But I found the reality after watching the interview this morning, both disheartening and disturbing, much more than I expected.

"...a complete idiot."? Come on. She's the Governor of Alaska...not Illinois. Give her some credit. :)

The problem is that she only needs to be reasonable for 90 minutes, and after that they can put her on ice for the rest of the election.

It's hard to see how see will do well when she can't handle Katie Couric, but overconfidence is never a good strategy.

'W' was Governor of Texas, not Illinois and he's a complete idiot. The white and right voting block of both of those State's would vote for Charlie Manson were he on the Republican ticket.

Speaking of a complete id...

Thanks for the insight fingtree. I was talking about Blagojevich!

There are some things in political life that are too absurd in and of themselves to be apt fare for satire. I didn't think the SNL interview was especially funny because it is impossible to make that blathering ninny sound sillier than she actually sounded. Unfortunately, that won't sway true believers.
